Autora inglesa, creadora de la exitosa y celebrada serie de novelas sobre Harry Potter. La primera de las siete novelas que han de completar la serie, Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal, fue publicada en 1997. La novela, por medio de vívidas descripciones y una imaginativa trama, cuenta la historia de Harry Potter, un solitario huérfano que descubre que es en realidad un mago. El libro fue un éxito de librería inmediato tanto entre los niños (a quienes estaba dirigido) como entre los adultos. Los tomos que le siguieron Harry Potter y la cámara secreta (1998), Harry Potter y el prisionero de Azkaban (1999) y Harry Potter y el cáliz de fuego (2000) también fueron muy populares. En reconocimiento al mérito por haber renovado el interés de los niños por la lectura, Rowling fue nombrada Dignataria del Imperio Británico en 2001.
